30 bands in 30 days: band one

Posted on 19 October 2009 by Kate Kachor

Last night I headed out on the crazy journey that is 30 bands in 30 days.

I had decided to catch Lost In The Woods, a Sydney based band at the Red Rattler.

I had never ventured to the Red Rattler before and as I weaved through the back streets of Marrickville I became more curious about its location.

The Red Rattler itself is a true experience. Hidden away in a laneway that backs on to Marrickville bowling club, it is an impressive sight.

A smallish crowd had gathered at the entrance, helping the buzz of the place spill out onto the pavement.

From a distance a glaring bouncer stood at the mouth of the club, carrying a facial express that looked more likely to swat away the venue’s buzz than add to it.

Though were we wrong. As we walked closer a charming smile cooled his glare and he ushered us through the awaiting door.

The light of the evening had suddenly been swallowed up by a dark corridor. Soft red light cushioned our path to the awaiting cashier.

We were now in, what seemed, another world in another time.

I can not speak more highly about The Red Rattler.

The vibe, the atmosphere, the people – it’s a place you always wished existed, a place Alice would have frequented with the White Rabbit and Mad Hatter on her 18th birthday.

It’s a little bit of the past, meshed with beer from today, and would you believe it, chocolate.

Lost In The Woods kicked off their set at 7pm. The crowd, sitting in a simple yet superb array of vintage lounges, warmed to them immediately.

It was hard not too. The humble chatter from front man, Brian Yatman, offered onlookers a peak into his soul.

Yatman is a man all about his music.

The passion in his voice, his movement on guitar (both electric and acoustic) and skills on the keyboard were impressive.

Harmonies, extended instrumental play and cheeky heckling from the crowd are Lost In The Woods bread and butter.

With a sound and style that could be likened to The Decemberists, and The Mountain Goats, they carry on a love affair with indie folk and alternative country that would make any cowgirl swoon.

With a touch of humour, the glorious sounds of a French horn and slide guitar, the band was the perfect antidote for looming Mondayitis.

Lost In The Woods are definitely a band on the rise.
