Whitley will take on the producing reigns when he records his new album.

The Melbourne singer aka Lawrence Greenwood, started recording the follow up to his debut, The Submarine, in the last few months.

“It’s being recorded between my bedroom in Collingwood and a garage on the Victorian Coast. I want it to be an accessible recording. It has its own sound,” the singer said.

“I’m not particularly striving for anything, as I don’t want to be anything I am not. I’m just letting the album grow and letting the songs speak for themselves.”

Whitley wrote most of the album after being on the road last year with USA and Australia tours with Ben Kweller, Josh Pyke, The Panics as well as his own headline shows.

“During the year of solid touring, I wasn’t thinking at all about writing but when I came back it gave me a real perspective of where my life was at after having a break from it. You get institutionalised or something. It’s not a normal life,” he said.

While taking on the producer role may seem like a giant leap for an artist’s second album, the decision sits well with Whitley.

“Each decision is my decision and it sticks. It’s my responsibility. I understand why people work with producers and I will work with one again one day. I just believe if you play music, you should record music yourself at least once in your career,” he said.

Whitley’s second album is due out later this year.
