The album, Blackbird - the music of Lennon and McCartney, will be released on November 1.
Blackbird mixes both the lyrics of John Lennon and Paul McCartney to Noonan’s jazz stylings.
The album was recorded in New York with a number of veteran jazz players including Miles Davis’ long-time double-bass player, Ron Carter, drummer Lewis Nash, saxophonist Joe Lovano, guitarist John Scofield and Melbourne-based keyboard player Sam Keevers.
“About 18 months ago, I was asked to put in a proposal for a jazz fellowship proposal. And that just got me thinking about how I might combine my two major musical loves –pop and jazz,” Noonan said.
“Fortunately I was able to secure the involvement of the eminent saxophonist Joe Lovano. I thought that he would be perfect for this project and he was. He’s such an incredible jazz musician and I knew he would help me breathe new energy into these incredible songs. I put out an energy that I wanted it to happen and it just fell together.”
The former George member will tour her new album throughout November and December this year.
Noonan is also working on her second solo album, which she expects will be released mid-way through 2009.
The singer released her debut solo album, Skin, in 2007.
Blackbird - the music of Lennon and McCartney will be released through SonyBMG on November 1.
