BJM helps close the gap

Posted on 21 August 2008 by Kate Kachor

Brian Jonestown Massacre have teamed up with artist Greg J Maher to help the Close The Gap campaign.

The US outfit and indigenous artist Maher will create an artwork together that celebrates aboriginal history as well as commemorate the band’s tour.

The band’s lead singer Anton Newcombe is a supporter of indigenous affairs around the world and was eager to be a part of the Close The Gap campaign which calls on governments to commit to closing the life expectancy gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians within a generation.

“We wanted to have a commemorative piece of art that reflected the spirit of the Brian Jonestown Massacre and also was a symbol of Australian Indigenous culture,” the band’s manager Ted Gardner said.

The artwork will be signed by the band, framed and put up for online auction after the tour.

A percentage of the proceeds from its sale along with those made from the sale of T-shirts featuring the artwork will go to the Close The Gap Campaign www.closethegap.org.au.
